Diaries and papers, 1849-1907.

Diaries, correspondence, ephemera, and clippings which date from 1849 until 1907. The bulk of the collection is made up of Weygandt's personal diaries, which contain information on daily routines, entertainment, books, banking, economic history, Philadelphia society and local scandal. Additionally, there is a small series of letters, 1845-1852, from W.W. Cottingham of Easton, Pa. to Cornelius Weygandt which deal with family life, Cottingham's student life at Princeton Theological Seminary, and his teaching career.

Cornelius Nolen Weygandt was born in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1832, the son of Thomas Jefferson Weygandt and Sophie Makins Helmbold Weygandt. He married Lucy Elmaker Thomas. His interests included the classics, art, theater, history, and genealogy. Weygandt began his career as a clerk at the Western Bank in Philadelphia (later the Western National Bank), was appointed Cashier in 1863, Vice President in 1878, and President in 1887. Cornelius Weygandt, born December 13, 1871 in Germantown (Philadelphia, Pa.), graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1891. He worked as a reporter for the Philadelphia Record, 1892-1893, and for the Philadelphia Evening Telegraph, 1893-1897. In 1897 he joined the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania as Instructor.
